Alternative Water Supply Information
To determine the uses of water within and surrounding the proposed permit boundary, both aerial
and ground surveys were performed. Any diversion of surface water flows were noted.
Additionally, a survey was performed at the State Engineer's office to determine the surface
water users in the area. All surface water use in the area was for ranching uses of stock watering
and irrigation. Several windmills exist in the area and these are also used for ranching. Table
2.04.7 -4 details existing water rights in the area as listed with the State Engineers office and
Map 2.04.7 -1 identifies the approximate locations of the sites.
The Chacon Ditch crosses the main access road and the proposed rail spur embankment. The
Applicant will maintain culverts beneath these structures and construct a feeder ditch along the
west side of the rail spur embankment to facilitate irrigation (Maps 2.05.3 -1 and 2.05.3 -3,
Exhibit 18 ).
The Applicant had a significant amount of water available for operations on the Lorencito Tract,
which were lis *ed in Table 2.04.7 -5. Based on the projected water needs for operations on the
Tract, the Applicant relied on the water rights decreed to four of the irrigation ditches which
were shown in Table 2.04.7 -5, that historically irrigated portions of the Lorencito Tract:
1. Davis and Martinez Ditch;
2. Martinez and Medina Ditch;
3. Rafael Cordova Ditch: and
4. Velasquez and Chacon No. 2 Ditches.
The Applicant no longer leases any water rights. The discussion of these ditches remains in the
permit for historical purposes.
The referenced ditches diverted water from the main stem of the Purgatoire River, also
known as the Las Animas River.
The decreed locations for the headgates of those ditches are as follows:
1. Davis and Martinez Ditch. The headgate is located in the NEANEA Section 31,
Township 33 South. Range 66 West, 6th PM.
2. Martinez and Median Ditch. The headgate is located in the NE /4SW /4. Section 32,
Township 33 South. Range 66 West, 6th PM.
3. The Rafael Cordova Ditch. The headgate is located in the NEANEA, Section 30.
Township 33 South, Range 67 West 6th PM.
4. The Velasquez and Chacon No. 2 Ditches. The headgate is located in Section 33,
Township 33 South. Range 66 West. 6th PM.
TR -17 2.04 -32 Revised 08/10/12
