seed mix, preferred by wildlife, specifically for the pinion -juniper habitat in the San Juan Basin
(Attachment 1). We recommend that the mining areas be interseeded with shrubs and fortis in
Attachment 1 to increase the value of the area to wildlife and restore to the level it was at prior to
mining.
Due in large part to big game populations, La Plata County received combined economic
benefits of approximately $43.4 million dollars in 2007 from hunting and fishing activities that
support an estimated 477 jobs (BBC Research and Consulting 2008). These economic benefits
from hunting and fishing recreational activities are a sustainable annual source of economic
benefit for La Plata County only if wildlife populations, and particularly big game populations,
are maintained. Reclaiming the mining area with the appropriate reclamation seed mix and
standards can return this area back to productive and functioning habitat for wildlife to support
the continued economic benefits of wildlife related recreation in the county.
We appreciate the opportunity to comment. If you have questions, please contact myself at (970)
375 - 6707. We look forward to working with you to benefit wildlife.
Sincerely,
Brian Magee
SW Region Landuse Coordinator
XC: Matt Thorpe, Area Wildlife Manager, Shari Titus, SWRO, Area 15 File,
Literature Cited
Bartman, R.
