George
We are writing to respond to comments presented in your letter to George Patterson and
Rich Munson dated June 13, 2014. Specifically, this letter responds to your opinion that
the water level in the MW -NW well will not rise above the level of the roof of the
Southfield Mine.
Background
Your letter presents the following paraphrased discussion regarding potential future water
levels in the MW -NW well:
• The coal zone associated with the MW -NW well is regionally under confined
conditions.
• The removal of coal material during the mining of the Southfield Mine and the
associated increase in permeability has changed conditions in the mine from
confined to unconfined aquifer conditions.
• Due to the lack of a pressure head associated with confined aquifer conditions,
water in the MW -NW well will not rise above the roof of the mine (the top of the
coal seam).
We disagree with your conclusion that the water level in the MW -NW well will not
rise above the top of the aquifer due to the removal of coal material.
