2.04.9 <br />Average annual precipitation is about 12 inches, average annual air <br />temperature is about 46 degrees F, the average frost -free season is about <br />115 days. <br />Typically the surface layer is light brown loam about 6 inches thick. The <br />subsoil is reddish brown clay loam about 10 inches thick. The substratum, to <br />a depth of 60 inches, is light reddish brown loam. <br />Permeability is moderate, and available water capacity is high. Effective <br />rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is medium. The hazard of <br />erosion from wind is slight and from water is moderate. <br />Included with this soil in mapping are a few small areas of Kech, Progresso, <br />and Work soils. <br />The native vegetation on this soil consists mainly of ,pinyon, juniper, big <br />sagebrush, Indian ricegrass, Junegrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, and galleta. <br />Some areas of this soil are in native vegetation and used for grazing of <br />livestock and wildlife and for recreational purposes. Some areas are used for <br />irrigated crops, mainly hay, small grains, pasture, and corn for silage. <br />This soil is suited to all of the crops commonly grown in the survey area, <br />except those which require a very long growing season. Care is needed to <br />prevent water erosion. The soil can be kept in continuous row crops if <br />residue is used to maintain an adequate content of organic matter and if <br />good management of irrigation water and land leveling are used to control <br />erosion. Minimum tillage and the use of cover crops and green manure <br />crops also help to maintain organic matter content and to control erosion. <br />This soil can be used for irrigated pasture and hay crops. It is well suited to <br />smooth brome, orchardgrass, pubescent wheatgrass, alfalfa, and clover. <br />Irrigation can be done by contour ditch, corrugation, and furrow methods <br />Because annual precipitation is low and has poor seasonal distribution, this <br />soil is not suited to nonirrigated pasture.
