Resource Number: 5DT1053 (Coal Sales Building) <br />Temporary Resource Number: GRI 2014 -35 <br />21. General architectural description: The coal sales house is a simple, square, one room building constructed of 8" <br />masonry block with a corrugated metal shed roof. The single wood door is within the north wall of the structure <br />which contains five windows overall, one within the north wall, one each within the east and west walls and two <br />within the south wall. The windows contain steel sashes with 8 lites in a 2W4H configuration. The building <br />contains a walkout basement with a doorway opening and a single window in the south wall. Window and door <br />dimensions are shown on the plan attached architectural plan view. A single chimney is located at near the <br />southeast corner of the structure along the east wall. <br />22. Architectural style /building type: Concrete square, one room building with shed roof and full walkout basement. <br />23. Landscaping or special setting features: None. <br />24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: The structure lies within the boundary of site 5DT1053, the historic <br />King Mine. Associated buildings within the site include the fan foundation /housing, the hoist house, the shop <br />foundation, the powder house, the powerplant, mule barn and silo and the tipple. <br />IV. Historical background: Site 5DT1053 is the King Mine of Bowie. It is located on a terrace on the north side of <br />the North Fork of the Gunnison River about 300 meters east of the original town site of Bowie. The mine buildings <br />are within an area measuring approximately 500 meters N -S by 200 meters E -W. The lower building complex is on a <br />river terrace at elevation 5980 feet, while the mine portal complex is on a south - facing mountain slope at 6590 feet <br />elevation. Much of the following description of the site and chronological information is extracted from a paper written <br />by Robert F. Bowie and his cousin Alice B. Abseck. <br />The mine was owned by the Juanita Coal and Coke Company incorporated in 1902 in Pueblo, Colorado. That <br />year the company purchased land six miles east of Paonia because of the proposed extension into the area of the <br />Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. The mine took its name from A.T. King a corporation director and /or his brother <br />H.B. King, the second general manager of the mine. In 1906, Alexander Bowie invested in the Juanita Coal and Coke <br />Company, and was hired as the general manager. That same year the railroad was completed as a broad -gauge line <br />from Delta. In July of 1907, the tramway was completed and the first coal was delivered. The mine produced coal <br />
