1
J
' BACKGROUND DATA
At the request of the State Historic Preservation Officer, the Colorado State Office of
' Surface Mining, and Bowie Resources Limited (as represented by J.E. Stover and
Associates, Ltd.) a Level II documentation of the historic town of Bowie (SDT122) and the
associated King Mine (SDT1053) was performed by Grand River Institute during the month
' of August 1996. These historic sites were previously recorded in the fall of 1995 as part of
the Cultural Res rce Invento Re o f r he Pro osed Bowie #2 Mine in D I o nt
Colorado for Bowie Resources. Ltd. (Conner 1995).
'
Level II documentation is utilized for recording historic structures/sites that may be
' eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, but that are not of sufficient
architectural merit to require a formal project like an Historic American Buildings Survey
(HAWS) or an Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). Requirements for a Level II
recordation involve prior ownership information, architectural data and a historic context
' similar to what is needed for HABS/I-IAER Specifically, Level II represents an expansion of
Level I (basic) recordation.
' This documentation enhances the individual building descriptions of the standing
structures by the creation of measured drawings with details of construction methods and
materials, and by the submission of archivally preserved black and white photographs and
negatives. Level II photography employs a medium format camera and 120 size film, which
produces negatives of 2 1/4" x 2 I/4" size. This level of photography allows for a more
' detailed recording with finer negatives.
Historic buildings included in this Level II documentation ate standing structures
' within historic sites SDT122, the mining town of Bowie, and SDT 1053, the Bowie mine.
These are located in T.13S., R.91 W., Section 15, 6'r P.M. (Figure 1). The buildings included
in the study associated with SDT122 are the Bowie home garage, the mine office, the mine
' shop/garage and the lower garage associated with the row houses (Figure 2). The buildings
included in the study associated with SDT1053 are the hoist house, the powerplant, the sales
' house, and the mule barn (Figure 3). Other structures in these sites are foundations or
otherwise lack integrity of location, so were not photographically documented. This study
was completed by the end of August 1996. Additional information can be obtained from the
' Colorado Historical Society's Office of Archaeology and History Preservation, where the
documents and photographs are archived.
' Site SDT122 is the town site of Bowie. It is located on a terrace on the north side of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River at an average elevation of 5980 feet. The town site
was originally recorded in 1977 as part of a survey for the expansion of Highway 133. The
' form included only employee housing erected by the Juanita Coal and Coke Company in an
area that measured approximately 300 meters E-W by 250 meters N-S.
