10/27/2014 State.co.us Executive Branch Mail-Middle Fork of the South Platte
STATE OF <michaela.cunningham@state.co.us>
Cunningham - DNR, Michael state.co.us>
COLORADO 9 9 @
Middle Fork of the South Platte
1 message
Joe Spear <Joe.Spear@populous.com> Fri, Oct 24, 2014 at 3:06 PM
To: "michaela.cunningham@state.co.us" <michaela.cunningham@state.co.us>
Michael,
Nice speaking with you today on the phone.
As I mentioned during our conversation, I am concerned about the October 3, 2014 discharge from the placer
mine near Alma (which is just upstream from our property). During 2008 we hired Trout Headwaters (THI) to
perform stream restoration and habitat improvement work on our section of the river, so we are very interested in
being certain there is no long term impact. I have been informed that no fish kill has been observed, but I remain
worried there will be a deleterious effect on this year class of trout as well as a future diminution of aquatic
insects. I spoke to a representative of THI today and he agreed that most likely any brown trout eggs from this
year's spawn had been asphyxiated by the siltation which occurred. I was hoping something could be done to
monitor the situation and ultimately address any impact to the fish and insect life.
I understand there will be a Mined Land Reclamation Board hearing November 17th, 2014 to assess the issue. I
am hopeful that something can be done to address the impact to downstream properties.
For you files our property is located at the following address:
52087 Highway 9
Alma, Colorado 80420
Joe Spear
816-329-4229
The information contained in this electronic communication, as well as in any attachments, may contain
confidential or privileged information and may constitute non-public information, and is intended solely for use
by the addressee(s).
