Our goal at the Colorado
Parks £t Wildlife (CPW) is to provide complete, consistent, and timely information to all
entities who request comment on matters within our statutory authority and our mission-
which is to protect, preserve, enhance and manage wildlife and their environment for the
use, benefit, and enjoyment of the people of Colorado and its visitors.
District Wildlife Manager Rick Gardner recently visited the site described as SE1/4 of SW1/4
section 81, Township 22S, Range 47W, in Prowers County which already has a gravel pit on the
site. The land around the proposed site is agricultural and holds relatively tow wildlife value.
Wildlife expected at the site would be primarily small ground-dwelling mammals, ground
nesting birds, passerine and migratory birds, possibly waterfowl feeding, fox, raccoon,
coyotes as welt as larger mammals including deer. There is no evidence at this time of any
threatened or endangered wildlife using this area nor does this area appear to be critical
habitat.
Current CPW policy directs our efforts towards proposals that will potentially have high
impacts to wildlife and wildlife habitat. The emphasis of the CPW's concerns is on large
acreages, critical habitats, wildlife diversity, and impacts to species of special concern, or
those that are state or federally endangered. Due to the current uses, size and location of
the proposed site impacts of the development, as proposed, may be characterized as
minimal.
This may not mean that the landscape has no value to wildlife. Therefore, in this case, we
want to focus our recommendations on planning and implementing your proposal to minimize
negative impacts to wildlife at the site. Reclamation of the site following the mining should
OF LOCO,
Bob D.Broscheid,Director,Colorado Parks and Wildlife.Parks and Wildlife Commission:Robert W.Bray-Chris Castilian,Secretary-Jeanne Herne
Berl Kane,Chair-Gaspar Perricone-Dale Pizel-James Pribyl-James Vigil-Dean Wingfield-Michelle Zimmerman-Alex Zipp * +
 9& 4/114L/F1
