TR-07 RECLAMATION PLAN
Wildflower Planting: Previously, a blend of wildflowers were planned for including in the
seeding. It has been found that invasion rates of various resident wildflower species is quite high and
probably exceeds what would be produced by planting. Planting wildflowers along with the invasion rates
would likely overload the vegetation with forbs at the expense of the grasses which are more important.
REQUIREMENT 23. All seed tags should be kept for future reference.
Seed Tags: When a bag of seed is supplied by a reputable seed company, seed tags of some
kind are usually included and are most often attached to the bag. All seed tags should be kept for future
reference. The location of planting that seed should also be noted. Although bad seed is rarely a cause of a
seeding failure, it can happen. Also, seed batch, purity, and germination rates are provided for each species
on the seed tags. Rarely is this information ever used, but if the tags are not saved and there is a need to
refer to that information in the future to compare seeding success rates or for verification purposes the
information is not available.
Seed Storage and Length of Life: Seed should always be stored in a cool, dry location, and
preferably where mice can't get to it. If some of the grass seed is left over and it is properly stored, that
seed can usually be used the next year. If it has not been properly stored it is risky to use the seed for
anything other than incidental planting. If older seed is used, it is usually best to mix one-year old seed
with fresh seed or increase the seeding rate by about 20% if no fresh seed will be used. Using seed that is
two or more years old is not advisable except in non-critical locations such as temporary erosion control.
The older the seed, the more seed that is needed to produce the same growth. After three years, seed
should be considered worthless and should be discarded or used as a mulch.
SEED MIXTURE (formerly the Upland Seed Mixture)
BROADCAST DRILLED
SPECIES Pounds Live seeds per Pounds Live seeds per
PLS/Acre sq ft PLS/Acre sq ft
Blue Grama 1 16 0.5 8
Sideoats Grama 4 13 2 6.5
Little Bluestein 3 15.5 2 10
Western Wheatgrass 4 11.5 2 5.75
Green Needlegrass 3 12.5 2 8.3
Sand Bluestein 5 13 2 5.2
TOTALSI 20 81.5 1 10.5 43.75
(NOTE: All species may be blended and seeded together.)
Coal Creek Sand Resource Amendment 3 (2005)- M-1988-044 Exhibit E Page 17
