The slopes are 2 to 5 percent.
Runoff is medium, the hazard of wind erosion is severe and the hazard of water erosion is
moderate. Precipitation ranges from 9 to 18 inches a year and weather conditions are quite cold
year round. The soils present are consistent with a typical dry mountain loam range site.
The existing vegetation includes streambank wheatgrass, sheep fescue, muttongrass, pine
needlegrass, Letterman needlegrass, Sandberg bluegrass, junegrass and traces of bluebunch
wheatgrass, squirreltail, and Nevada bluegrass. These grasses form a sparse stand beneath an
open stand of big sagebrush, with smaller amounts of bitterbrush and rabbitbrush. Forbs on the
site include lupine, pussytoes, aster, fleabane, yarrow, bluebells, buckwheat, phlox, fringed sage
and snakeweed.
Therefore, the following reclamation mix is recommended:
Common Name Scientific Name % of Mix Cool/Warm Ht (ft)
Mountain Brome Bromus marginatus 20 Cool 1-3'
Slender Wheatgrass Elymus trachycaulus 20 Cool 1.5-4'
Streambank Wheatgrass Elymus lanceolatus 10 Cool <1'
Rocky Mtn/Idaho Fescue Festuca saximontana 10 Cool 1.2'
Prairie Junegrass Koeleria cristata 5 Cool 1-2'
Thickspike Wheatgrass Elymus lanceolatus 10 Cool 1-3'
Beardless Wheatgrass Pseudoroegneria spicata ssp.Inermis 10 Cool 1.54'
Bottlebrush Squirreltail Elymus elymoides 5 Cool 1-2'
Sandberg Bluegrass Poa secunda 10 Cool <1'
This mix is adapted for dry mountain conditions and good for restoration, forage and wildlife
purposes.
Seeding rate: 50#per acre broadcast seeded,2-5#/1000 sq.ft.for smaller areas.
Mountain Brome, Rapid developing, short lived, medium sized, cool season bunchgrass. Native to the
intermountain west.
Slender Wheatgrass, Important, native cool season, short-lived perennial bunchgrass. Early sera]species found in
northern Great Plains, northern Rocky Mountains and Intermountain regions.
Streambank Wheatgrass, Native of western U.S.,northern Great Plains and western Intermountain region of the
U.S. Drought-tolerant,cool season,long-lived,perennial sod former.
Helping People Help the Land
An Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
