Notice of Termination of Jurisdiction
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has begun the process of terminating its jurisdiction
over the Sunlight Mine, Permit No. C- 1981 -046. The underground operation was operated by Garfield Energy
Corporation under the provisions of the Colorado Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Act. The affected area is
located in Garfield County, approximately 11 miles south of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The permit area lies
within Sections 28, 33 and 34 of Township 7 S, Range 89 W of the 6"' PM. The permit area consists of 180 acres
of which about 5.2 acres were disturbed and reclaimed by mining activities. Termination of jurisdiction is being
sought for the entire 180 acres. The surface and coal mined were under private ownership.
The Sunlight Mine is a formerly permitted mine operated by the Garfield Energy Corporation. The Mined Land
Reclamation Board revoked the operating permit and forfeited the reclamation bond in 1987. As provided for in
Colorado Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, the Division assumed the task of accomplishing
reclamation of the site between 1990 and 1999.
Written comments, objections and requests for an informal conference or a formal public hearing before the Mined
Land Reclamation Board may be submitted to the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, 1313
Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 within 30 days of the last publication of this notice.
