Ak
AVCOLORADO
Division of Water Resources
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 821
Denver, CO 80203
4esponse to Reclamation Permit Amendment Application Consideration
DATE: August 13, 2014 R L- 1.
TO: Peter S. Hays, Environmental Protection Specialist
CC: Division 1 Office, District 3 Water Commissioner AUG 14
FROM: Sarah Brucker, P.E.
I Divlsie, e,
Mining & 5-., _
RE: Greeley 35th Ave Pit, File No. M -19^ 77-03
Operator: Martin Marietta Materials, Inc.
Contact: Jeremy Deuto, GEI Consultants, Inc., (970) 224.7374
Sections 34 Ft 35, Twp 6 North, Rng 66 West, 6th P.M., Weld County
CONDITIONS FOR APPROVAL
® The proposed operation will consume ground water by: ® evaporation from exposed surface
area, ® dust control, ® water removed in the mined product, ® concrete production, ❑
other:
COMMENTS: The Greeley 35th Ave Pit (WDID 0303022) is an existing surface mining operation on 381.38
permitted acres near Greeley, Colorado. The primary commodities mined at the site are sand, gravel,
and aggregate for construction materials. The subject application seeks an amendment to change the
post - mining land use of approximately 130 acres of the western portion of the site, known as the West
Pit, to developed water resources. The remaining 251 acres within the permit boundary outside of the
West Pit area will be reclaimed according to the existing permit reclamation plan.
The West Pit is proposed to be lined with a slurry wall. Slurry wall construction is anticipated to occur
from July 2014 to October 2014, with a leak test to be performed from October 2014 to January 2015,
The completed reservoir is proposed to be used as a water augmentation reservoir.
Depletions from mining operations at this site were most recently included in the Greeley 35th
Ave /Iverson Combined Substitute Water Supply plan which expired on May 31, 2013. The Applicant
submitted a request for renewal of this substitute water supply plan to cover depletions at the Greeley
35th Ave Pit on May 24, 2013; however this office has been unable to approve this request to date.
Due to the lack of inclusion of the Greeley 35th Ave Pit in a substitute water supply plan approved by the
State Engineer or a plan for augmentation decreed by the Water Court, this office is unable to comment
favorably on the proposed amendment. The applicant may contact the State Engineer's Office with any
questions.
1313 Sherman Street, Room 821, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3581 F 555.555.5555 www.water,state.co.us
' pF COLD
e
o
