Vegetation seeding will occur during the first planting window after <br />completion of work within the re- graded and topsoiled area. <br />Seed Mix <br />The seed mix for the re- vegetation of the King II Mine was developed <br />based on the stated post - reclamation land uses of rangeland and fish <br />and wildlife habitat, and the goal of reestablishing vegetation <br />communities characteristic of the pre - disturbance landscape and <br />complementary to those vegetation communities currently existing <br />outside the areas of disturbance. <br />A seed mix for the mine site requires species adapted to predominantly <br />loamy soils. The plant species must be adapted to xeric and potentially <br />droughty moisture conditions, given the predominantly south and <br />southwest exposures of the area to be reclaimed. The majority of the <br />species selected were cool season, complementing the adjacent native <br />vegetation. The species selected were robust, and either tall or bushy to <br />provide wildlife cover and forage. A mix of warm and cool season species <br />was developed to provide wildlife with cover and forage throughout the <br />growing season. Graminoids, forbs, and shrubs to be seeded provide a <br />mix of plant morphologies and structures. <br />Application Methods <br />Drill seeding will be employed in all areas where slopes are 3:1 or less <br />and equipment access is not a problem. In the remaining cases, <br />broadcast seeding will be employed. <br />The drill should be regulated to place seed between 0.25 and 0.5 inches <br />in depth from the ground surface. The seeding rate identified in each <br />seed mix table is the rate of application to be used when drill seeding. <br />Drill rows should be positioned so as to be perpendicular to the <br />predominant wind direction and along the contour. In areas where <br />marginal seeding conditions exist (rocky, windswept, shallow soil), two <br />passes of the drill seeder are appropriate, the applications being <br />perpendicular to each other and 45° offset from the predominant wind <br />direction. <br />Broadcast seeding will be employed in areas where drill seeding cannot <br />be employed due to limitations in area or slope. Where broadcast <br />seeding is employed a centrifugal, fan, airblast, or hydroseeder should be <br />used to distribute the seed.
