Notes for site visit August 14, 2014:
There was a light drizzle when I initially arrived on site, and by the time Bill
and I began our inspection, at around 8:15, it was a steady rainfall.
Conditions were very wet and very muddy. We first stopped at Pond C. Last
week, the pond was dewatered and being left to dry out so it could be
cleaned out, but before the Pond was cleaned out, the rain started. Ponds
B, D, and F have been cleaned out. Pond D had been recently dewatered
and was below the primary spillway elevation. Pond F held approximately 2'
of water.
The next stop was near the top of gob pile #2. Gob from the wash plant was
being hauled to the top of the pile. Due to slick and wet conditions, we were
not able to access the very top. We stopped at the location where
employees park their vehicles and visually inspected what we could see of
the pile. Overall, while wet and muddy, it looked fairly good. No standing
water was observed.
The first two benches of pile #2 are almost to final grade. The gob at the toe
of bench #2 shown in last weeks report had been hauled back to the top of
the pile and /or the TR -76 area. There was a section of stacked gob in the
TR -76 area that was dry looking and was most likely from the toe of bench
#2. Ditch F7 had recently been cleaned out.
We drove by gob pile #3, where there was very little activity. From Bowie
road, there did not appear to be standing water on the pile.
Wingwalls will be installed at the inlets of Culverts J -6 & 7 in an effort to
better protect the canal. A minor revision will be submitted in the next
week for the proposed wingwalls.
A design is currently underway to expand gob pile #3 to the west, between
ditch J9 and the overhead conveyor. A technical revision will be submitted
for the proposed expansion. Before gob is expanded into this area, subsoil
may be excavated and potentially mixed with gob over the winter months.
However, no gob will be placed in this area until the revision is approved.
The small topsoil stockpile north of the east coverfill stockpile will be moved
to stockpile F /F1. The remaining topsoil north of the east coverfill stockpile
will be salvaged and placed in stockpile F /F1. This area will become part of
an expanded east coverfill stockpile.
There will be increased activity at or near the west coverfill stockpile.
Coverfill will be used for building the road along the north edge of gob pile
#3, and hauled back to the first two benches of gob pile #2 for final
reclamation.
The remaining material in the west stockpile will be scraped and re- located
to the east stockpile. The next step will be subsoil excavation in the
footprint of the west coverfill stockpile, which will be at least 15' deep to
meet the requirements of final reclamation. The east stockpile will expand
to the north to provide storage for excavated subsoil.
The road on the north side of gob pile #3 is ready for coverfill placement as
soon as conditions are dry enough. Plans were to begin placing dirt today,
but due to inclement weather conditions, work had been postponed.
