VEGETATION CHARACTERISTICS
The Crystal Hill mine site lies in foothill terrain along the western side of the San Luis Valley, at
the base of the La Garita range.
A preliminary vegetation inventory was conducted by Impact Environmental Consultants, Ltd.,
at four sites within the previous operator's proposed permit area in October 1979. A 50 -meter
transect and a meter square plot were analyzed at each site to determine species composition
and approximate percent ground cover. The following list contains species found in the Crystal
Hill area. Potential species present in the general area and not necessarily ones actually found
in the permitted area are also listed.
The following species of grasses and similar plants have been identified at the mine site:
Agropyron cristaturn
crested wheatgrass
Agropyron smithii
western wheatgrass
Agropyron trachycaulum
slender wheatgrass
Agrostis exarata
Agrostis scabra
ticklegrass
Bouteloua gracilis
blue grama
Bromus anomalus
nodding brome
Bromus marginatus
Elymus triticoides
Eragrositis sp.
Festuca arizonica
Arizona fescue
Festuca thurberi
Thurber's fescue
Hordeum jubatum
foxtail barley
Koeleria cristeta
prairie junegrass
Koeleria micrantha
junegrass
Muhlenbergia montana
mountain muhly
Muhlenbergia torreyi
ring muhly
Oryzopsis hymenoides
indian ricegrass
Oryzopsis micrantha
littleseed ricegrass
Poa federiana
muttongrass
Poa sp.
Bluegrass
Sitanion hysteryx
bottlebrush squirreltail
Stipa comata
needle and thread
Stipa robusta
sleepy grass
Stipa sp.
Needlegrass
The BLM and the SCS consider Danthoia parryi (Parry oatgrass) as likely to be present as well,
but it was not collected.
