Retaining walls: Install and/or reinstall exiting cables designed to provide lateral support to the
top of vertical retaining wall support. Cables should be anchored in a properly designed `dead
man system' installed on the inboard side of the access road and post tensioned. To confirm the
walls are performing satisfactorily, we recommend wall movement be frequently monitored.
The work plan should include a contingency plan for repairing the walls and limiting road access
in the event monitoring data indicate potential stability concerns with the walls.
Monitoring: Design and implement a monitoring program to measure the magnitude and rate of
movement of key access road locations and retaining wall components. Monitoring points
should consist of surface monuments located on the berm on the outboard side of the completed
access road and on key locations on retaining wall timbers. Inclinometers at key locations in the
roadway and on vertical retaining wall members should also be considered. The monitoring
points should be monitored periodically and the monitoring reports distributed the DRMS and
the County. The results should be compared with maximum allowable movement tolerances,
above which contingency actions should commence. An experienced geotechnical engineer
should prepare the work plan and oversee its implementation.
1MZ9PA1-
John Erich Rauber
Colorado Registered Engineer
No. 26647
May 30, 2010
