In lieu of compaction testing, proofrolling was conducted during the installation of
fill material. Proofrolling was conducted with a rubber-tired front end loader during
both installation of the backfill, the road subbase, and the final road surface. Final
proofrolling conducted on June 18, 2014. The proofrolling demonstrated that the
road showed no areas of deflection or pumping for the entire length of the road
(Station 10+00 to Station 27+29).
• The drainage ditch on the south side of the road upgradient of the culvert Inlet at
Station 14+50 extends approximately 50 feet. The ditch contains rocks that will act
as an energy dissipator in lieu of a rock check dam.
• The presence of bedrock on the inboard side of the road did not allow for the
installation of a drainage ditch on the inboard side of the road. The Contractor
installed nine rock check dams approximately every 40 feet between Station 16+00
and Station 18+20.
• There is a ditch on the inboard side of the road from Station 18+60 to Station 19+15
upgradient of the sedimentation basin that contains energy dissipation rocks.
• Waddles and silt fencing were not placed on the outboard side of the road btewwen
the road surface and the retaining wall. Alternate ECM included the installation of an
erosion mat and seeding the soil.
• Wattles were not placed below the retaining wall. Alternate ECM included leaving
the ERTEC S-fence that was installed for construction and placement of erosion mat
and seeding.
• Seeding of completed areas was completed using a seed mixture recommended by the
La Plata County Cooperative Extension for higher altitudes. Appendix B of this
attachment contains the seed mixtures used for final seeding.
4.0 Conclusions
The new access road at the MayDay Idaho Mine Complex, La Plata County, Hesperus,
Colorado was constructed in general accordance with the plans and specifications. Field
conditions, product availability, and plan discrepancies resulted in a number of changes noted in
this attachment. The final site walkthrough conducted with representatives of the DRMS and the
La Plata County Fire Department indicated no issues with the access road as constructed and that
the road was accessible by emergency vehicles.
5.0 References
Carroll & Lange-Manhard, 2013: Construction Plans, Mayday Idaho Mine Complex, Wildcat
Road, La Plata County, Colorado.
