System Operation
The water treatment ponds (long pond, T -1, T -2, P -9 and the refuse pond) at the No. 1
Mine Site support the developed water resources postmining land use. Water from the No.
1 and No. 3 Mine flow into the long pond. Flow from the long pond is piped to pond T -1.
Discharge from pond T -1 flows in a open channel to pond T -2.
Water from pond T -2 can be directed to three locations as follows:
a. The water can be directed by open channel flow to pond 9.
b. The water can be directed by a combination of an open channel and a pipeline
to the ditch leading to the refuse pond.
C. The water can be directed by a combination of an open channel and a pipeline
to Outfall 001.
Water that flows to pond 9 can at times fill the pond. Water discharged from pond 9 flows
into the open ditch leading to the refuse pond.
The volume of water that reaches the refuse pond though the open channel ditch is
diminished by evapotranspiration and seepage into the surrounding soils. Based on the
diminished low flows, the Operator does not believe any significant amount of mine
seepage water will accumulate in the refuse pond. In any case, flow directed to the refuse
pond will be managed so the pond does not discharge. At least 2 feet of freeboard
measured from the invert of the emergency spillway will be maintained in the refuse pond.
Seepage water will be redirected to pond 9 or outfall 001 if the water level in the refuse
pond approaches the two foot freeboard threshold.
TR -28 4 -x (Rev. 07/14)
