TRAPPER MINING INC.
July 24, 2014
RECEIVED
Mr. Jared Ebert
Environmental Protection Specialist g 2014
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety JUL 2
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203 Division of & Safety Mining
Dear Mr. Ebert:
RE: Trapper Mining Inc., Permit C -81 -010
Response to the DRMS Letter for the Second Quarter 2014 Sediment Pond Inspections
On July 7, 2014 the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety Division sent a letter
responding to the 2nd Quarter 2014 Sediment Pond Inspections. In the letter you requested an
explanation of the methods used to determine the percent of sediment during the second quarter and how
it differs from the methods used during the 3rd 4th and 1St quarters. Trapper Mining Inc. (TMI) typically
schedules pond cleaning during the 3rd quarter of each year. To determine if a sediment pond requires
cleaning, the actual sediment depth is measured. Usually this depth is measured during the 2nd quarter
after the seasonal runoff. A line with weights is placed in several areas of the pond to determine the
average depth of the sediment. The distance between the top of the sediment to the sediment marker
(which is the 60% stage of storage capacity) is measured. Using the Sedcad model run of the sediment
pond's asbuilt, the stage storage capacity is determined. Any sediment pond with sediment near or over
60% is scheduled for cleaning, weather permitting.
Typically there is not much runoff during the 3rd 4th and 1St quarters; the sediment volume is determined
by a visual inspection. It is also too difficult and considered unsafe to physically measure the sediment
during times when the ponds are covered with snow and ice.
Should there be any major runoff periods after the second quarter measurements, TMI will take steps to
measure the sediment levels in the affected sediment ponds. Should any ponds require sediment
removal, TMI will attempt to remove the sediment. However this attempt may be delayed due to unsafe
conditions.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Tonia Marie Perkins
C: F.
