Decision
Based upon my review of all actions, I have decided to implement the Proposed Action described
below and the design criteria associated with the Proposed Action listed on pages 16—31 of the
EA.
The proposed action will treat approximately 6,445 total acres and would address the purpose
and need with the following actions: Salvage on approximately 4,580 acres with areas of dense
understory excluded from treatment to retain snowshoe hare foraging habitat. Aspen
regeneration cutting would occur on approximately 276 acres and prescribed burning for
regeneration of aspen would occur on 1,589 acres.
Soil and water improvements to resource damaged areas would include maintenance, re-routing,
or decommissioning of approximately 9.6 miles of existing road segments and restoration of 31
sites that are contributing to soil and water resource damage. These site locations are typically
around culverts and ditches where resource damage has or is occurring.
The existing roads in the project area would be used with some road reconstruction, reopening,
and pre-haul maintenance. There are approximately 17.2 miles of proposed temporary roads, 2.2
miles of proposed specified roads, and 18.8 miles of existing roads that would need to be re-
opened for the project, all temporary roads will be obliterated and closed after treatments are
completed.
Two existing gravel pits, approximately five acres each, one off of NFSR 500 and one off of
NFSR 550, would be reopened to provide native "pit run" material to existing road surfaces.
When compared to the No Action alternative, this alternative will provide for forest products,
reduce hazard fuels, improve lynx winter foraging, improve forest health conditions, repair
watershed degraded areas, and address standing dead safety hazards.
Other Alternatives Considered
In addition to the selected Proposed Action, I considered the No Action alternative as required by
HFRA authority. A comparison of these alternatives can be found in the EA on page 15.
Alternative 1 - No Action
Under the No Action alternative, current management plans would continue to guide
management of the project area.
Alternative 2 - Proposed Action
The Proposed Action would treat 4,580 acres with a salvage silvicultural treatment. Fuel
reduction treatments would include mechanical aspen regeneration on 276 acres and prescribed
fire for aspen regeneration on 1,589 acres.
2
