West Elk Mine 2013 Annual Hydrology Report 1 <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br />This Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) West Elk Mine 2013 Annual Hydrology <br />Report (AHR) summarizes the hydrologic monitoring activities and pertinent data <br />associated with the West Elk Mine mining operations for the Water Year 2013 (WY <br />2013), October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2013, in accordance with the Colorado <br />Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (CDRMS) Permit C- 1980 -007. <br />1.1 Overview of Mining Operations <br />The West Elk Mine is an underground coal mining operation that produces bituminous <br />coal and conducts other mining activities including surface crushing, washing, <br />conveying, and load -out operations. MCC has utilized two chemicals in their treatment <br />process: aluminum sulfate for flocculation in sedimentation ponds and sodium <br />hypochlorite for drinking water treatment. <br />During WY 2013, mining was completed in the E -seam longwall panel E3 from crosscut <br />12 up to crosscut 3, and in panel E4 from crosscut 66 up to crosscut 28. Development <br />mining was completed in the E5 headgate from crosscut 74 to crosscut 30, and the E6 <br />headgate from crosscut 3 to crosscut 8.
