VEGETATION CHARACTERISTICS <br /> The Crystal Hill mine site lies in foothill terrain along the western side of the San Luis Valley, at <br /> the base of the La Garita range. <br /> A preliminary vegetation inventory was conducted by Impact Environmental Consultants, Ltd., <br /> at four sites within the previous operator's proposed permit area in October 1979. A 50-meter <br /> transect and a meter square plot were analyzed at each site to determine species composition <br /> and approximate percent ground cover. <br /> The following species of grasses and similar plants have been identified at the mine site: <br /> Agropyron cristatum crested wheatgrass <br /> Agropyron smithii western wheatgrass <br /> Agropyron trachycaulum slender wheatgrass <br /> Agrostis exarata <br /> Agrostis scabra ticklegrass <br /> Bouteloua gracilis blue grama <br /> Bromus anomalus nodding brome <br /> Bromus marginatus <br /> Elymus triticoides <br /> Eragrositis sp. <br /> Festuca arizonica Arizona fescue <br /> Festuca thurberi Thurber's fescue <br /> Hordeum jubatum foxtail barley <br /> Koeleria cristeta prairie junegrass <br /> Koeleria micrantha junegrass <br /> Muhlenbergia montana mountain muhly <br /> Muhlenbergia torreyi ring muhly <br /> Oryzopsis hymenoides indian ricegrass <br /> Oryzopsis micrantha littleseed ricegrass <br /> Poa federiana muttongrass <br /> Poa sp. Needlegrass <br /> The BLM and the SCS consider Danthoia parryi (Parry oatgrass) as likely to be present as well, <br /> but it was not collected. <br />
