PERMIT#:M-1995-027
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:MAC
INSPECTION DATE: May 28,2014
OBSERVATIONS
The inspection was conducted by Michael Cunningham of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division). Jim Cherrington was present on behalf of Park County Road and Bridge Department. The Ansley Flat
Pit No. 2 is located 2 miles southeast of Fairplay, Colorado on Highway 9 in Park County. The site is permitted
for 15.2 acres and the post-mining land use is rangeland. The commodity of interest at the Ansley Flat Pit No. 2
is sand and gravel. The inspection was conducted as part of the Division's regular monitoring program.
The Ansley Flat Pit No. 2 was not active at the time of the inspection. The site operates intermittently due to
the elevation and snow cover; the site became accessible several weeks prior to the inspection. The permit
sign was, posted at the site entrance and the boundary of the affected area was adequately delineated as
required by Rule 3.1.12. The Ansley Flat Pit No. 2 is operated in conjunction with the Ansley Flat Pit (M-1980-
251), which lies immediately to the west; the sites are separated by the access road.
The pit is approximately 10 acres in size and mining is progressing to the east. The pit is approximately 10 feet
deep and the pit slopes have been graded to 3H:1V. The approved processing activities at the site include
screening and crushing; a grizzly was present on the pit floor. The topsoil has been stripped from the affected
area and stockpiled around the perimeter of the pit; the topsoil stockpile was vegetated and stable. In
addition, numerous product stockpiles are located on the pit floor. The Division observed a stockpile of
material that did not originate from the site;the stockpile consisted of boulders and cobble. According to the
Operator, the material is from a CDOT project and is being temporarily stored at the site. If the Operator uses
any of the material for backfilling or other purposes at the site, then an inert fill notice will need to be
submitted to the Division pursuant to Rule 3.1.5(9).
This concluded the inspection.
