PERMIT#:M-1980-251
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:MAC
INSPECTION DATE:May 28,2014
OBSERVATIONS
The inspection was conducted by Michael Cunningham of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division). Jim Cherrington was present on behalf of Park County Road and Bridge Department. The Ansley
Flat Pit is located 2 miles southeast of Fairplay, Colorado on Highway 9 in Park County. The site is permitted
for 9.9 acres and the post-mining land use is recreation. The commodity of interest at the Ansley Flat Pit is
sand an gravel. The inspection was conducted as part of the Division's regular monitoring program.
The Ansley Flat pit was not active at the time of the inspection. The site operates intermittently due to the
elevation and snow cover; the site became accessible several weeks prior to the inspection. The permit sign
was posted at the site entrance and the boundary of the affected area was adequately delineated as required
by Rule 3.1.12. Mining at the site is progressing in a north easterly direction; the existing pit is located along
the west side of the site and is approximately 5 acres in size. The approved processing activities at the site
include crushing and screening. Product and topsoil stockpiles are located east of the pit. In addition, the pit
floor contained unscreened product stockpiles. The existing pit slopes are at an angle of 3H:1V.
During past inspections, the Division has observed water on the pit floor; the approved Mining Plan does not
allow for the exposure of groundwater. The pit floor was dry at the time of the inspection and there were no
indications that groundwater was being exposed at the site. The Division observed a shooting range at the
northeast corner of the site. The shooting range is used and maintained by the Park County Sheriff's
Department. The shooting range is approximately 0.5 in size and contains an earthen backstop. As noted
above, the approved post-mining land use is recreation. Therefore, the presence of the shooting range is not
considered to be a problem.
This concluded the inspection.
