Any action which reduces backwaters (such as bank stabilization or
stream flow reduction) is considered detrimental to potential and •
existing razorback habitat`. This fish's presence in the mine
permit area of the Colorado River is unlikely.
Bonytail Chub (Gila eleaans). State Endangered Species. Bonytails
presently are found only in lower Colorado River Reservoirs. They
have not been collected in Colorado since the late 1960's and are
believed to be extirpated in the state.
Humpback Chub (Gila cvpha). State and Federal Endangered Species.
The humpback chub is presently found in the Yampa, Colorado and
Green Rivers of Colorado. Its habitat preference appears to be
swift, silty currents and deep slow-moving canyon-bound waters of
large rivers. It is unlikely that the humpback is present in the
project area of the Colorado River.
Colorado Sauawfish (Ptvchocheilus lucius). State and Federal
Endangered Species. Recent studies have identified the reach
between Palisade and Grand Junction as an essential habitat area.
Adults are usually taken from eddies, backwaters and pools, while
young inhabit warm, shallow nursery areas between sandbars and
river bank. In general, this species appears to prefer larger
rivers rather than tributaries and most individuals have been
collected in deep pools and runs of the Colorado River. It is
considered that this species does not occur in the area of the mine
site.
3.8 Prime Farmland InveatiQation
No prime farmland exists in those areas where surface disturbance
and/or construction is planned for NCEC's proposed project.
Available moisture is the primary limiting factor, but slope and •
NCEC - Coal Ridqe #1 3-94 ABC/1145/900301
