COLORADO
Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Interoffice Memorandum
June 16, 2014, 2014
From: Leigh Simmons '
To: Jared Ebert
Subject: Williams Fork Mine (Permit No. C- 1981 -044)
TR -36, groundwater review
You requested that I review the material pertaining to groundwater within the TR -36
application.
In the preparation of this memo I also reviewed:
• The existing permit application packet (PAP)
• Annual Hydrology Reports (AHRs) for the Williams Fork mine
I have the following general comments regarding PR -14:
The additional text that has been proposed to be added is curiously worded, and the reasons for adding
it are not immediately apparent.
The proposed text is in three paragraphs, the first of which simply describes the relative elevation of the
5A portals.
The second paragraph describes the potentiometric (piezometric) surfaces within the Middle Sandstone
and the Twentymile Sandstone and the location of these units within the generalized stratigraphic
column.
The third paragraph makes two statements:
i. That water filling the mine cavity is unlikely to affect water levels or water quality within either
of the sandstone units;
ii. That the mine cavity is unlikely to fill with water to the point where it would discharge from the
portal.
Based on my brief review of the documents in the laserfiche database, I would broadly agree with each
of these statements.
Finally, I would note that there is little quantitative specificity in the predictions, and that the revision
does not seek to change the water monitoring plan.
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http: / /mining.state.co.us
John W.
