Seneca II Mine
SL -6 Phase M Bond Release Request
June 2014
Table 9 indicates that the predicted TDS values in June and July, 497 and 607 mg /1, at Site SSF13
were occasionally exceeded. This is due to the baseline TDS values at Site SSF11 being higher
than expected. In any case, the observed TDS increases between the two sites were always less
than the predicted values. Also, the highest TDS value on Table 9, 680 mg /1, is still less than
2,000 mg /l crop tolerance level indicated above. Therefore, TDS increases on Fish Creek due to
the two mines are not causing any significant negative impact to crops in the area.
Agnement of observed hydrologic impacts with the 'Probable Hydrologic Consequences" (PHC) projected in the
mining permit
The Seneca PHC predictions were discussed in the section above Impacts to Alluvial Valley
Floors AVFs). The observed TDS values are below the PHC predicted values.
Completion of the Hydrologic Reclamation Plan
There are four monitoring wells associated with the Seneca II Mine. Well GW -S41 -W (computer
id SW41) monitors the Wadge coal (bedrock). Well GW- S4I -LWI (SOV41) monitors the
Lennox -Wadge interburden (i.e., Wadge overburden, also bedrock). Well GW -S68 -A (SBAL68)
monitors the Bond Creek (008) alluvium. Well 008 -AU -3 (SFAL72) monitors the Fish Creek
alluvium. The two bedrock wells are in the permit boundary and will be removed using well
abandonment procedures approved by the CDRMS after approval of this bond release
application. The two alluvial wells (one of which is a GWPOC well owned by Twentymile Coal
Company) exist outside of the permit boundary. Well SBAL68 will be retained until termination
of the CPDS permit for Outfall 008.
Four bedrock wells were drilled by the USGS in 1987 upstream of Pond 008 and Spoil Spring
SSSPG9. They are: 1) Well BL2 (98 feet deep, completed in the Lennox coal), 2) Well BI2 (150
feet deep, completed in the Lennox /Wadge interburden), 3) BW2 (164 feet deep, completed in
the Wadge coal, and 4) Well BU2 (175 feet deep, completed in the Wadge underburden). All
wells are two inch diameter PVC, and all four are normally flowing. All four wells are capped and
pressurized with nitrogen gas to prevent freezing in the winter. Water quality and completion
information for these wells may be found in the USGS Open File Report 92 -122; and USGS
Water - Resources Investigation Reports 92 -4067 and 92 -4187. These wells will be removed using
32
