June 1998 4
Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. 1997 Aoaual Hy&-o]W Report
QUARTERLY HYDROLOGY MONITORING PROGRAM
DATA SUMMARY
(Period July 1, 1996 through December 31, 1997)
Introduction
This section of the 1997 AHR presents all surface and ground water data collected at the
Southfield Mine from 1979 through the end of the reporting period. Discussion of these data,
including potential impacts and trends, follows below.
Surface Water
Field and laboratory data collected from approved monitoring points on Newlin, Oak, Magpie
and Second Alkali Creeks are shown on water quality Tables 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and
17. Stream flow measurements for these monitoring locations are summarized on Table 9.
Monitoring of upstream and downstream locations on Newlin, Magpie and Oak Creeks was
suggested in the Division's Mid-Term review of the Southfield permit. EFCI agreed that this
approach would provide more useful data than the currently approved single monitoring point
on each of these creeks. This change of monitoring plan is included with Technical Revision
No. 29, currently under review. EFCI voluntarily began monitoring two locations on the
referenced creeks during the second quarter of 1997. Data from the additional monitoring is
included in the stream quality and quantity data summary tables.
Stream flows occurred during the spring and summer months in response to snowmelt and
precipitation events during the reporting period. Measurable flows were monitored in all the
streams. Newlin Creek flowed, at low levels, through June 1996 due to heavy rains received
during early Spring. In Oak Creek, low flows persisted during the second and third quarters
of the reporting period. Similar to previous reporting periods, Second Alkali Creek exhibited
infrequent, low flow patterns in response to precipitation events.
Water quality data, shown on the attached tables, indicate no unusual or harmful trends. Data
for Oak Creek indicate slightly increasing levels of TDS, calcium, and sulfate as compared to
previous monitoring periods. Field measurements of conductivity similarly show an upward
trend. Heavy metal concentrations are at or below levels of previous monitoring data.
The data for Newlin Creek, obtained only during the 2nd quarter of 1997, are comparable to
ranges found in previous monitoring periods. No deterioration of Newlin Creek or Oak Creek
is apparent from the water quality data collected to date.
Monitoring data from Magpie Creek show increasing levels of calcium, aluminum, sulfate,
iron, and manganese. These data were obtained at the upstream sampling site and are not
