Volume III, Tab 7
The "Woodlands" soil was fully described and sampled for laboratory analysis at two
representative sites, S1 and S2. Sample locations are plotted on the soils map and are
within the projected Gob Pile disturbance area.
Woodlands Tvpical Soil Sample "S1" Site and Profile Description: 30% slope,
southwest aspect; "JW" Juniper Woodland vegetation community; slopewash colluvium
over residuum at depth; steeply sloping upland sideslope; stable surface, no erosion in
vicinity of sample site location; moderate permeability.
A horizon - 0 to 2 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) stony loam to clay loam with about 20%
gravel, cobble, and stone-sized sandstone fragments, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist;
moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly
plastic consistence; many medium, fine, very fine, and few coarse roots; slightly
effervescent; from lab data: pH=7.3 (neutral), EC=0.4 (nonsaline), SAR=0.6 (nonsodic),
OM=3.8%; gradual smooth boundary.
Bw1 horizon - 2 to 8 inches; dark brown (10YR 4/3) stony loam to clay loam with about
15% gravel, cobble, and stone-sized sandstone rock fragments, dark brown (10YR 3/3)
moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard to hard, friable, sticky
and plastic consistence; many medium, fine, very fine, and few coarse roots; moderately
effervescent; from lab data: pH=7.3 (neutral), EC=0.4 (nonsaline), SAR=0.6 (nonsodic),
OM=3.8%; gradual wavy boundary.
Bw2 horizon - 8 to 18 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) stony clay loam to sandy clay loam with
about 15% gravel, cobble, and stone-sized sandstone rock fragments, dark brown (10YR
4/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky to massive structure; hard, friable, sticky
and plastic consistence; common medium, fine, very fine, and few coarse roots; strongly
effervescent; from lab data: pH=7.4 (slightly alkaline), EC=0.3 (nonsaline), SAR=0.6
(nonsodic), OM=4.3%; gradual wavy boundary.
BCk horizon - 18 to 30 inches; pale brown (10YR 6.3) stony clay loam to sandy clay loam
with about 20% gravel, cobble, and stone-sized sandstone rock fragments, brown (10YR
5/3) moist; massive structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic consistence; strongly
effervescent; from lab data: pH=7.4 (slightly alkaline), EC=0.3 (nonsaline), SAR=0.8
(nonsodic), OM=2.1 %; gradual wavy boundary.
C horizon - 30+ inches; auger refusal (hit larger sandstone fragments); could not dig
further, but do not believe it is sandstone bedrock yet; rock fragments >35%; not
sampled.
Woodlands Tvpical Soil Sample "S2" Site and Profile Description: 20% slope, south
aspect; "JW" Juniper Woodland vegetation community; slopewash colluvium over
residuum at depth; steeply sloping upland sideslope; stable surface, no erosion in vicinity
