May 21, 2014 C- 1996 - 083 /Bowie No. 2 Mine SLB
B of Volume IX) is based on an overall grade of -4.0 %.
Ditch F -2, along the western edge of Gob Pile 42 was in good condition. Ditch F -19 was littered with large rocks
that had rolled down from the cover material placement operations on Bench 5 and the top of the pile. The
operator indicated that the rocks are cleared at the end of each shift; the ditch did appear to have been reworked
recently, and the rocks were not imbedded in the ditch.
A low spot was observed on Gob Pile 44, below Ditch F20 (Point 4 on map excerpt below), that appeared to have
the potential to impound water. The operator indicated that this area would be promptly regraded; the Division
will verify that the area is regraded during the next site inspection.
Ditch F20 was in need of maintenance on the western end, where sediment deposited in the ditch may cause flow
to back up.
Three slope measurements were taken on Gob Pile 44, in the central area and west end (Points 2, 3, and 5 on map
excerpt below). The slope at Point 2 was 35 %, Point 3 was 37 %, and Point 5 was 34 %. Slopes are required to be
no steeper than 2.5:1 on the lower bench (40 %), and 3:1 (33 %) on the upper benches, per approved Figure 1 of
Volume IX of the approved permit application package.
REVEGETATION Rule 415Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Weed infestations were observed in several areas, including the West and East Diversion ditches above Gob Pile
42, the eastern coverfill pile at Gob Pile 42, Ditch F4, Ditch F -23, Ditch F -15, Ditch J8 -1, Ditch J9 -1, the
outslopes of the Gob Pile 42 haul road, around Pond J, and in the Pond F vicinity.
TOPSOIL Rule 4.06Removal 4.06.2; Substitute Materials 4.06.4(4); Storage and Protection 4.06.3;
Redistribution 4.064:
Topsoil stockpile E, at Gob Pile 42 had been reshaped on the northern edge. This pile will need to be seeded this
fall, after redistribution on Gob Pile #4, Gob Pile # 1, and the lower benches of Gob Pile #2 has been completed.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 18
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 5 of 20
