. March 2001 4
Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. 2000 Annual Hydrology Report
QUARTERLY SURFACE AND GROUNDWATER MONITORING PROGRAM
DATA SUMMARY AND DISCUSSION
2000 AHR
Introduction
This AHR section presents all surface and ground water data collected at the Southfield Mine
from 1979 through the end of the reporting period. Discussion of these data, including
potential impacts and trends, follows below.
Surface Water
Field and laboratory data collected from approved monitoring points on Newlin, Oak, Magpie
and Second Alkali Creeks are shown on water quality Tables 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and
17. Stream flow measurements for these monitoring locations are summarized on Table 9.
Monitoring of upstream and downstream locations on Newlin, Magpie and Oak Creeks was
continued during the reporting period. Data from the additional monitoring is included in the
stream quality and quantity data summary tables. In addition, EFCI no longer includes data
from the Newlin Creek monitoring point prior to second quarter of 1997 since the single
monitoring location was located between the two current monitoring points. Data from the
original Newlin Creek monitoring point (NC-1) is included in prior AHR's.
Stream flows occurred in Oak Creek and Newlin Creek during the spring and early summer
months in response to limited precipitation events and snowmelt during the reporting period.
The limited precipitation events were not enough to produce ephemeral surface flow in
Magpie Creek or Second Alkali Creek during the entire reporting period.
Review of the accompanying water quality data indicate no unusual or harmful trends. Data
for Oak Creek monitoring indicate slightly increasing levels of TDS, conductivity, sodium,
calcium and sulfate downstream as compared to the upstream location. All other parameters
were similar for the upstream and downstream monitoring locations, and are comparable to
ranges found in previous monitoring periods.
The data for Newlin Creek show no significant changes from the upstream and downstream
monitoring locations, and are comparable to ranges found in previous monitoring periods. No
deterioration of Newlin Creek or Oak Creek resulting from mining is apparent from the water
quality data collected to date.
No monitoring data from Magpie Creek or Second Alkali Creek are available for discussion
for the reporting period.
