Th
hydrogeologic investigations and modelin
bypassing the existing extraction system
compliance wells MLGW -7 and MLGW -15.
extraction and monitoring well network is inc
hitting this request for a Technical Revision (TR -23) to the
e I construction of an upgrade to the Ute Park Extraction
Aill Tailing Storage Facility (TSF) 1 Dam. The existing
II eventually be replaced by this new wellfield as it is fully
need for a new wellfield was identified during ongoing
which indicate that seepage impacted groundwater is
ind could migrate further downgradient toward point of
site map depicting the area below 1 Dam and the existing
ded in Attachment A, Figure 1.
Since 1995, Henderson has worked to imp ement groundwater protection programs, especially in the
areas downgradient of 1 Dam. The protection programs have allowed Henderson to evaluate the
effectiveness of the 1 Dam seep water c Ilection system and have resulted in the installation of
monitoring and extraction wells in addition to characterization of the aquifer downgradient of the Dam.
The aquifer downgradient of 1 Dam is comprised of glacial drift and outwash deposited during the
Quaternary period (Attachment A, Figure !2). This unconsolidated material allows for storage and
movement of groundwater. In 2012 AJ , Clear Creek Associates and CMC installed additional
observation /monitoring wells and completed a capture zone assessment utilizing these new wells along
with previously installed monitoring wells aid piezometers. Groundwater flux through the aquifer is
estimated to range from 300 to 400 gallons per minute.
The purpose of the Ute Park Extraction Well
groundwater below 1 Dam and pump it into f
the TSF and recirculated back to the Mill r
anticipated to be completed in three phases,
effectiveness to be evaluated as the project I
early summer of 2014 and will involve the
infrastructure including piping, electrical and
anticipated to allow for further characterizal
information on composition, thickness, hydra
information will be utilized to optimize the de
eld is to effectively intercept and capture seepage affected
e seepwater collection canals, where it is then pumped into
-ocess water system. The construction of the wellfield is
as shown in Attachment A, Figure 3. This will allow for its
ogresses. Construction of Phase I is scheduled to begin in
installation of one extraction well (MLEX -1) and support
instrumentation. The installation of the well in Phase I is
on of the aquifer by providing drilling logs and additional
lic conductivity and pumping capacity of the deposits.
