Limited - Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 4 of 11)
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility was good throughout the project area (ranging from 75 -90 %).
Vegetation cover was moderate throughout the area, with some areas of thick sagebrush that
limited ground visibility.
22. Comments: Special attention was paid to areas of exposed soils and subsurface contents in
cut banks and eroded areas.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP)- Compass
online database
Dates: 03/31/2014
24. Previous Survey Activity - In the project area: Eight previous cultural resource inventories cover
small portions of the proposed access to the borehole pads (see bolded entries in Table 1 and
project maps). These projects include OAHP numbers MC.E.R17, MC.LM.R319, RT.CM.NR2,
RT.CO.NR3 /NR4, RT.LM.NR77, RT.LM.R7, RT.LM.R27, RT.LM.R44. None of the four proposed
core holes surveyed for the current project had been covered by previous inventory. However,
none of the proposed access roads were excluded from survey for the current project; the
previous survey coverage was not sufficient. The seven additional core holes proposed by
Twentymile for this project were not newly surveyed because they were completely covered by
two previous inventories (see project maps): Metcalf's 2000 survey of Twentymile's Fish Creek
expansion subsidence area (RT.CM.R3) and Grand River Institute's 1980 Oak Creek expansion
for Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Companies (RT.LM.R76).
In the general region: Forty -three previous cultural resource inventories have been conducted within a
mile of the project area (Table 1). The majority of these projects have been conducted for
Twentymile Peabody Coal mining activities, with a fewer amount of transmission line, land
exchange, and Railroad projects.
25. Known Cultural Resources - In the project area: No previously recorded archaeological sites
are located within the immediate project area or area of potential affect (APE) (proposed core
hole pads or road corridors). The closest archaeological site is 5RT155, an NRHP eligible
prehistoric open camp, located over 600 feet northeast of proposed core hole pad WCO20 which
was previously inventoried for cultural resources. There are numerous isolated finds of artifacts
