May 8, 2014 C- 1981- 008/New Horizon Mine JHB
Pond 13 was discharging. Inflow into pond 13 is from runoff. At the time of the inspection, WF -C was not
pumping the pit water to Pond 13. Discharge measured 0.24 on the staff gauge, and the effluent was clear.
Vegetation needs to be cleared from the flume. Pond 13 discharges to Tuttle Gulch. Tuttle Gulch was flowing
rather muddy. The water discharging from Pond 13 was much cleaner than the flow in Tuttle Gulch.
Pond 11 held a shallow pool of water well below discharge elevation.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3
Currently, WF -C approved rangeland reference area is located at the Montrose County airport. Airport
personnel have informed the operator that they need to mow the reference area and cut down the tree species that
are established on this parcel. WF -C is looking at options for establishing an appropriate rangeland reference
area.
One area under consideration is located north of Tuttle Draw and Pond 12, and west of County Road 2700. This
location does not appear to have been previously disturbed. (Photos ) This site is visually dominated by
sagebrush, Galleta grass, Red -stem fillaree (stork's bill) Evening primrose, Scarlet globemallow and Buffalo grass.
This site has good diversity. The site could consist of the ridge top as well as the hillslopes, providing varying
aspects. Although some Cheatgrass was present, it was not dominant or pervasive. This site appears that it could
be representative of undisturbed rangeland.
Frank also showed the inspector a second site located east of County road 2700. This second site was dominated
by Redstem filaree and bunch grasses. This site appears to have been previously disturbed . (Photos )
The approve Irrigated Pasture was also viewed. The southern end of the Irrigated Pasture (IP) reference area
showed evidence of limited interseeding (seeding rows visible). The majority of the IP reference area appeared to
be in good condition. Noxious species were not immediately visible on the IP reference area.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Reclaimed irrigated pasture was looked at north of 5th street. This pasture looks well established.
Reclaimed dryland pasture was observed just east of the irrigated pasture.
