April 2014 1 10381640A
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) is pleased to submit this groundwater characterization report (Report) to
the State of Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) on behalf of Holcim (US) Inc.
(Holcim) concerning the former Boettcher Limestone Quarry (Site) in Laporte, Colorado. A DRMS letter
dated June 25, 2012 (DRMS 2012) described review of the analytical results reports for the March 2011
through March 2012 quarterly sampling events at the Site. In the review, the DRMS noted consistent
benchmark exceedances of barium in groundwater concentrations for two of four monitoring wells present
at the Site, consistent benchmark exceedances of total dissolved solids (TDS) in one well, and minor
MCL (maximum contaminant level) exceedances of boron in one well. The DRMS requested that Holcim
address questions associated with the nature and extent of groundwater impacts from the Site (if any),
the influence of hydrogeological conditions on groundwater and constituent transport, and potential
receptors hydraulically downgradient from the Site.
Holcim and Golder submitted to the DRMS a Groundwater Characterization Plan dated October 23, 2012
(Golder 2012) that details the planned approach to addressing the DRMS questions. This Report
describes the methodology and findings of the Groundwater Characterization Plan implementation
program. Based on these findings, this Report also addresses the questions presented in the June 25,
2012 DRMS letter and recommends a path forward to achieving full release of reclamation liability for the
Site in accordance with Section 3.1.7 of the Construction Materials Rule.
01""01 Golder
i. \10 \81640x1 0400\ gwcharwellinstallfieltlrep _fnl- 30apr14 \10381640a gwcharrpt _holcim- boettcher_fnl- 28apr1d- with holcim edits.docx
Associates
