stored south of the pit in a stockpile. All stockpile slopes will be 3H:1 V or less. The stockpile
calculations can be seen in Table D -7.
Table D -7
Topsoil Stockpile
Area
2.3 acres-
Approx. volume
25,000 c
Avg. height
6.7 ft.
Ratio
3
Minimum width
40.4 ft.
Overburden Stockpile
The overburden from Pit 1 will be stockpiled to the north of that pit and in portions of the
Stockpile along the southern edge of the permit area. Once enough of Pit 1 has been mined out
to start creating the wetland shelves in the Reclamation Plan, this stockpile will be rehandled and
will create a portion of the shelves shown in Pit 1.
5. Contamination Issues with the Gilsonite Refinery Lands
The Gilsonite Refinery property located immediately west of 15 Road, is an industrial site that
has been used for various refining activities since the 1950's. From considerable testing
performed by the landowner and the Colorado Department of Health, Hazardous Waste Division,
a number of contaminants are present on the Fruita Marketing and Management (FMM)
property. Soil tests have shown that petroleum hydrocarbons, benzene, arsenic are present in the
soil above desirable levels in few areas within the FMM property. Other metals and petroleum
compounds are present but are not above levels of SRO (Soil Remediation Objectives). These
SRO levels were determined by the CDOH Hazardous Waste Division. A plume of free product
petroleum hydrocarbons exists south of the refinery buildings at the top of the water table, but
since the normal flow gradient in the alluvium is to the southwest to the River, it is extremely
unlikely that this plume or ay other contaminants could be drawn toward the United permit area
15 Road Pit May 14 D -9
