State- and federally - listed threatened, endangered, and candidate 12 species potentially occurring in the
vicinity of Lorencito Canyon Mine permit boundary.
Common
Scientific
Legal
Known Range, Habitat Requirement Summary, and
Expected
within Permit
Name
Name
Status13
Occurrence Potential
Boundary?
•
Nests in rodent burrows in grasslands, shrublands,
deserts and grassy urban areas. In eastern Colorado,
prairie dog burrows in areas of short ground vegetation
Burrowing
Athene
are almost exclusively preferred. According to breeding
owl
cunicularia
ST
bird surveys in Colorado, documented occurrences in
No
Las Animas County are strictly on the eastern plains.
This species was not observed duringRre- permitting
°
surveys in or near the mine boundary. Unlikely to occur
within the mine permit boundary.
Known range and federally - designated critical habitat lie
approximately 50 miles north of the Mine Site. Requires
substantial mixed conifer forests dominated by Douglas -
fir, ponderosa pine or other tall conifers. Old growth
Mexican
Strix
forests on steep mountain or canyon slopes with
No
spotted owl
occidentalis
FT
sandstone slickrock settings are most often used for
nesting. This species was not observed during pre -
permitting surveys in or near the mine boundary. 14
Based on habitat requirements and documented nesting
locations, this species is unlikely to occur within the mine
permit boundary.
Fishes
Found in drainages of the upper Arkansas River, this
small freshwater fish prefers shallow, clear, sandy -
bottomed streams, with spring -fed pools and abundant
Arkansas
Etheostoma
aquatic vegetation. Needs large, deep pools to persist
darter
FT, ST
during late summer low -water periods. This species was
No
cragini
not captured during pre - permitting surveys in drainages
in or near the mine boundary. 14 Given the lack of suitable
habitat within the mine permit boundary, this species is
not expected to occur.
12 Federally- listed threatened, endangered, and candidate species shown on this table are from the Las Animas County, Colorado
list available at http: / /ecos.fws.govttess_ public/ countySearch !speciesByCountyReport.acfon?fips =08071 (updated 12/30/2012);
State endangered and threatened species compiled from CPWs threatened and endangered list at
http: //wildlife. state. co. usWildlifeSpecies /SpeciesOfConcernrrhreatened Endangered List/Pages /ListOfThreatenedAnd EndangeredSp
ecies.aspx (updated 12/21/2011).
13 Status explanation: FE = Federally listed as endangered; FT = Federally listed as threatened; FC = Candidate for listing as
federally threatened or endangered; FExp = Federally listed as endangered / experimental non - essential population; SE = State -
listed as endangered; ST = State- listed as threatened
4 Lorencito Canyon Mine — Wildlife Technical Report and Aquatic Technical Report, viewed using the online DRMS Document
Management System. http: // mining. state.co.us /ImagedDocuments.htm
RARE EARTh SCIENCE
