The design density will vary according to soil type and can not be
determined ahead of time. For the sandy clay soils anticipated at the site, we expect
standard proctor maximum dry density values will be in the range of 110 to 115 pounds
per cubic foot with optimum moisture contents of 10 to 18 percent. For design purposes,
a moist unit weight of 125 pcf is considered appropriate. Materials consisting of large
size rock will be placed in uniform layers not exceeding the average size of the particles,
lifts not in excess of 36 inches, and placed in a manner to minimize voids, pockets, and
bridging. The sub-base will be strengthened when conditions warrant with geo-textiles.
2.05-17a (Revised 7/28/03)
