Environmental Inspection — Lyons Quarry
March 26, 2014
Connie N. Davis
During flooding along South Saint Vrain Creek in September 2013, the creek breached its banks
on the west end of the Lyons Quarry property and flowed in braided channels throughout the
former processing and stockpile storage areas of the quarry floor. A shed that had been used as a
shop and for storage of lubricants and the former quarry office /scale house were significantly
damaged. As flood waters receded, much of the creek returned to its pre -flood channel;
however, towards the eastern portion of the quarry site, the creek remained in a new channel that
bisected the land between the remnants of the shed and office /scale house. Other quarry related
processing equipment was also moved around by flood waters throughout the quarry floor and
deposited along the braided channels through which the creek had flowed during the flood.
All quarry related structures and equipment will be removed from the site at a future date;
however, in an effort to prevent the remnants of the structures as well as other equipment from
leaving the site in the event of spring flooding, these items were scheduled for relocation to a
location and elevation on the quarry site away from the creek and the flood channels that were
created during the September 2013 flood, with the work to be completed by April 1, 2014.
The preventive clean-up activity was performed by Dirt Doctors and completed by March 26,
2014. An inspection of the site confirmed that remnants of the structures and equipment that
were potentially at risk for leaving the site during spring flooding had been relocated to safe
locations on the quarry site. Concrete foundations of the structures that do not appear to be at
risk for leaving the site during future flooding were not relocated.
The ground around the former shop /storage shed was inspected for any evidence of staining
related to quarry related activities and none was found.
The access road to the Lyons Quarry site was severely damaged during the flood. The only
access to the majority of the site requires crossing through the creek and therefore additional
clean-up activities cannot proceed until suitable access is available for removal of equipment and
debris from quarry site. Boulder County, current owner of the quarry property, has indicated that
the original access will be restored but a time for doing so has not been determined.
