Metcalf Archaeological Consultants,
April 25, 2014
Jason Musick
Environmental Protection Specialist II
Coal Regulatory Program
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
Dear Mr. Musick,
At the request of Brian Watterson with Twentymile Coal / Peabody Energy, I am writing this letter to
document the completion of our recent cultural resource inventory of core holes and access roads. On
April 23 and 24, 2014, 1 conducted a Class III cultural resource inventory of four proposed core holes (WC
016, WC017, WCO24, and WCO25) in T 5N, R 86W, Sections 9 and 16. All lands are privately owned
surface with State of Colorado owned coal. I also surveyed proposed new access roads to these
locations as well as the existing two -track road in the area that will be used for access and will require
upgrades. The existing two -track connects with existing bladed roads that were not inventoried for
cultural resources. No new archaeological sites were found during the survey. I documented two
isolated finds of historic farming equipment that are recommended not NRHP eligible and will not
interfere with any of the planned construction.
Seven additional core holes are proposed by Twentymile in Sections 10, 11, 14, 15, and 16 of T5N R86W
(WC018B, WC015, WCO22, WC019, WCO21, WCO23, and WCO20). These locations were not inventoried
with Class III survey because our files search of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation's
(OAHP) online database indicated that they were all completely covered by previous archaeological
surveys. There are no previously recorded cultural resources within the area of potential affect for any
of these core holes.
Based on the negative findings, I am making a recommendation of "no historic properties affected" for
the project. I will send you a full report and map of the inventory early next week.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Melissa Elkins
Project Manager
(970) 328 -6244
Fax: (970) 328-5623
P.O.
