elevation caused by the expanded mining and associated pumping at the Evans
#2 pit. (See attached boring logs from 2007 by Kleinfelder).
• Mitigation of groundwater impacts by pumping discharge water from the Evans
#2 Pit to the Excelsior Ditch for use by Southwest Farms, Inc. was an
appropriate mitigation in 2012.
The Evans #2 pit has continued to rapidly expand (unabated and unchecked) to an
approximate size of 90 plus acres and a depth of 34 plus feet without any mitigation
of the above concerns since 2006. The water level in the mine pit is approximately 34
feet below the ground surface. In September 2008 the average groundwater level
below Southwest Farms, Inc. property was about 8 feet below the ground surface and
is currently (04/18/14 10:30 AM) 18 plus feet below ground level. Therefore, the pit
dewatering activities are causing a drawdown on the order of 10 feet at the active
wells. The lateral extent of influence in the groundwater in sand and gravel in
alluvial soils for a vertical drawdown of 34 plus feet is on the order of 10 feet. The
extent of impact to the groundwater below Southwest Farms, Inc. from the mining
operations needs to be identified and appropriately mitigated. As stated in previous
letters it is important that Evans #2 preform a hydrologic analyses to identify these
impacts and to mitigate impacts to the groundwater levels at Southwest Farms, Inc.
as part of this mining permit amendment.
Please contact me at (719) 240 -2575 regarding any questions or concerns you may
have.
Sincerely,
John Sliman
Cc: John Paul Ary Fremont Paving and Ready Mix
Cc: Robert Huzjak RJH Consultants
Cc: Chad McShane Robinson Water and O'Dorsio
