COLORADO
Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
April 16, 2014
Mr. George Patterson, General Mine Manager
Energy Fuels Coal, Inc.
P.O. Box 459
Florence, CO 81226
RE: Southfield Mine, Permit C- 1981 -014, Pond Inspection Reports, First Quarter 2014
Dear Mr. Patterson:
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Division) has reviewed and found the above
referenced report to be in compliance with Division regulations, namely Rules 4.05.9(14), 4.05.9(15), and
4.05.9(17).
I would like to see future reports that indicate pond conditions that are in agreement with the comments
that I have made in my inspection reports over the past six months. I have observed that primary
spillways at Pond # 1 (at the loadout) and Pond #5 contain some sediment in the horizontal pipes. I have
also observed that a rill is forming near the emergency spillway at Pond 45 (on the pond side of the
embankment). I do not currently believe that maintenance action is required, but if the conditions worsen
(the pipes collect more sediment or the rill becomes larger) then maintenance will be required. Therefore,
inspection reports for these structures should thoroughly document the conditions.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me at (303) 866 -3567, extension 8113.
Sincerely,
gv-'7 ;7-1,
Robert Zuber, P.E.
Environmental Protection Specialist
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http: / /mining.state.co.us
John W.
