4/16/2014 State.co.us Executive Branch Mail - Fwd: FW: Wolf Creek Reserve -Response to CDRMS Preli mi nary Comments and Modification of Groundwater Invest...
jnettIeton@peabodyenergy.com
Based on the Division's preliminary review of the previously provided Groundwater Investigation Work Plan for the
Wolf Creek Reserve (WCR), the following items have been identified as needing additional
information /clarification, or as appropriate modifications:
1) The Division indicated that the proposed groundwater monitoring well location would not be representative ,
and is requesting that a minimum of one upgradient and one downgradient monitoring well be completed in both
the Wadge /Wolf Creek Interburden and the Wolf Creek Coal Seam, in order to adequately characterize the
groundwater hydrologic environment
2) Relative to well construction, the Division has indicated that well construction should meet the specific
requirements of the SEO Water Well Construction Rules (including requirements for grouted steel surface casing)
and any well completion activities need to comply with applicable SEO /DWR monitoring well permitting
requirements
Response /Proposed Plan Modifications: The original Work Plan proposed installation, testing, and ongoing
monitoring of a single groundwater monitoring well at location WC007 (renumbered on attached figure as WC005)
to establish the hydrologic characteristics of the Wadge /Wolf Creek Interburden. The rationale behind limiting the
groundwater hydrologic investigation to a single well included the fact that drilling to date in both the Wadge /Wolf
Creek Interburden and the Wolf Creek Coal Seam in the WCR area has not encountered any appreciable ground
water in either of these units, and the configuration of the groundwater hydrologic environment, which is
essentially a closed basin.
https: / /mail.g oog le.conVmai I /u /0 / ?ui =2 &i k= e29129fcb5 &viev-- pt &search =i nbox&th= 1456bl4cO8d4b9ff &si ml= 1456bl4cO8d4b9ff 6/9
