Production
(Table 2)
Total average production was 845.8 Ibs per acre. Of this, 367.6 pounds were introduced annual and
biennial forbs and 249.8 pounds were native perennial cool season grasses. Native annual and biennial
forbs, introduced perennial forbs, and native perennial forbs contributed 98.1, 53.5, and 48.2 pounds per
acre respectively. Introduced annual grasses produced 19.6 pounds with introduced perennial cool
season grasses producing 8.9 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density
(Table 3)
Total average woody plant density in the 2006 Reclaimed Area was 1453 stems per acre and composed
entirely of native shrubs. The predominant species was big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) with 1229
stems per acre. Mountain snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius) contributed 158.2 stems per acre to
the total. Antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) with 44.1 stems per acre. Saskatoon serviceberry
(Amelanchier alnifolia) and silver sagebrush (Artemisia cana) were also present, each with densities of
fewer than 15 stems per acre.
2011 RECLAIMED AREA
(Photographs 12 -18, Tables 4 -5)
Cover
(Table 4)
Introduced annual and biennial forbs were the predominant lifeform observed in the 2011 Reclaimed
Area, contributing 14.6 percent toward total all -hit vegetation cover. Of this, the majority (5.0 percent)
was Russian thistle (Salsola collina) with prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and two -lobed speedwell
(Pocilla biloba) contributing 3.9 and 1.7 percent respectively. Introduced annual grasses were the second
most encountered lifeform, contributing 4.1 percent toward total all -hit vegetation cover. This total was
predominantly composed of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) at 2.3 and 1.7
percent respectively. Native perennial cool season grasses contributed 3.4 percent to total first -hit
vegetation cover consisting predominantly of western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii) with 1.1 percent.
Also observed in the area were bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare) with 0.4 percent cover and 57% frequency,
houndstounge (Cynoglossum officinale) with 0.29 percent cover and 71% frequency, and Canada thistle
(Cirsium arvense) with 0.14 percent cover and 29% frequency.
Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 24.9 percent. Total average vegetation cover, for all
hits, was 25.1 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock each had 3.3, 14.9, 56.1, and 0.9 percent
first hit cover, respectively. Average species density was 26.4 species per 100 sq.m.
7
