Notes for site visit March 24, 2014:
Bill Bear and I began our inspection around 9:30. Our first stop was Pond C,
which was being dewatered to Pond D at the time of inspection. Both ponds
held water.
Our next stop was gob pile #2 where work was being done on previously
end dumped material. Significant progress has been made on placing and
compacting material, compaction testing was scheduled for gob piles #2 & 3
the following day (Tuesday). Bill thinks it could be up to 3 weeks for the
previously end dumped material on top of pile #2 to be completely placed
and compacted. No new gob is being dumped at gob pile #2, all activities
are focused on processing previously end dumped material.
We drove over to gob pile #4 and from the top of the pile, the slopes and
ditches below looked good. On my next site inspection, I plan to walk all the
ditches in the gob pile #2/4 area, weather permitting of course.
Next, we visited gob pile #3. Work continues on placing and compacting gob.
Over the weekend, the mine received some rain, so there were a few areas
of standing water in the eastern portion of the pile, but no puddles that
were large enough to be of concern. Gob coming from the wash plant is
being dumped in the drying area where it is being turned over by an
excavator. This gob is then placed in the active area of the pile. An effort is
being made to reduce the amount of native material being mixed with the
gob, but a small amount of mixing was still taking place due to the recent
rains. We walked to the outlet of the underdrain, and no water was flowing
out. Next, we walked around the southern edge of the drying area where
water continues to flow to Ditch J3.
Pond F holds about 6.5' of water and Sediment. Pond B holds a small
amount of water. The sediment level of Pond J is exposed, there is very little
water in the pond..
The concrete structure near Pond J mentioned in DRMS's March 11
inspection is a cistern. No special procedures will be needed for removal
during Pond J expansion.
