Mr. Michael Cunningham 3
CDRMS
December 13, 2013
Response:
UMC commits to using EPA Method 200.8 for testing surface and ground water.
3. The Applicant has indicated there are 9 domestic wells near the mill that are located outside
of the unnamed tributary which drains the mill site. Figure 13 -1 shows there are two
domestic wells immediately down gradient of the mill site. Please revise Exhibit U to include
the addition of these two domestic wells.
In addition, the applicant has stated that there are 11 wells (9 domestic and 2 industrial)
near the mill. Please specify the approximate distance to these wells. Are they within 600
feet of the mill site?
Response:
The domestic wells shown in Figure 13 -1 have been included in Exhibit U. Of these, the
northern most well (Mellott, DW02) is up gradient of the Mill and southern well
(Wibbenmeyer, DW01) is down - gradient of the Mill. There are 2 wells within 600ft of the
property, both are down- gradient of the mill. All wells (as reported by the State Engineer)
within a ±0.5 mile radius of the mill site are shown in Attachment 2. The topography
contours on this figure approximate the ground water gradient. UMC will replace the first 2
paragraphs of Section 14.9.1 to read as follows:
As reported by the office of the State Engineer, there are 453 domestic wells within a
2 -mile radius of the Mill, as shown in Figure 14 -1. There are 11 wells located
approximately 0.5 miles from the Mill; 8 are domestic, 2 are EPA monitoring wells
and one is an industrial well. These wells are described in Table 14 -5 and are
shown in Figure 14 -3 [see Attachment 2].
3 Approximate closest distance from mill site disturbance area.
The closest down - gradient wells (DW01, and DW03) are less than 500ft from the Mill
and are located on the North side of California Gulch, as is the Mill. DW01 is used
by Wibbenmeyer for domestic purposes. The State Engineer reports Stapleton as
owner of DW03. DW03 is on the property owned by Phillips and is planned for
intermittent use by Phillips for commercial purposes. There are no houses or
buildings on the Phillips property.
