The Cole Gravel Pit is located south of Kannah Creek Road approximately
15miles east of Grand Junction, Colorado. The Cole Gravel Pit is a 264.63 acre, 112c construction materials
operation. Andy Azcarraga accompanied the inspector during the inspection.
The mine identification sign and the affected area boundary markers were present and in compliance with Rule
3.1.12.
The mine was not active during the inspection.
Topsoil stockpiled around the perimeter of the permit area was much steeper than the required 311:1 V and were
void of any vegetation to minimize erosion. Per Rule 3.1.9(3) topsoil stockpiles shall be stored in places and
configurations to minimize erosion. The current configuration of the stockpiles will likely increase erosion of
the topsoil. This is noted as a problem. The corrective action required is to reconfigure the topsoil
stockpiles to slopes no steeper than 3H:1V. Please provide photo- documentation of the reconfigured and
seeded topsoil stockpiles no later than May 2, 2014 to avoid enforcement action.
No off -site damage was observed during the inspection.
In an effort to ensure the financial warranty remains adequate to reclaim this site per the requirements of the
approved reclamation plan, DRMS will update the reclamation cost estimate. The estimate will be forwarded to
the operator under separate cover.
Photos that show the conditions observed during the inspection are included at the end of this report.
