PERMIT #: M -1978 -102
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: February 21, 2014
OBSERVATIONS
The Shipps Pit was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) as a
follow -up inspection to confirm a corrective action was completed by the Operator. The site was previously
inspected by the Division on May 9, 2013. During the last inspection a problem was cited for the mine sign not
indicating the current Operator as required by Rule 3.1.12.
The Operator, Jim Cozad, had contacted the Division to indicate the corrected sign was posted at the southern
entrance of the site by the corrective action due date, but was not able to submit a photograph of the sign to
the Division. The corrected sign was observed during this inspection. A photograph of the sign is attached.
The problem cited in the previous inspection report is resolved.
The site appeared unchanged since the last inspection. The Operator stated approximately 1,000 cubic yards
of material was removed from the site by voicemail prior to the inspection. As stated in the previous
inspection report, the Division recommends the Operator backfill the portion of the highwall along the
western boundary to prevent any future impacts from the mining operation outside of the permitted
boundary. The western highwall was unchanged since the last inspection and appeared stable.
Photograph taken during the inspection are attached.
Inspection Contact Address
Debbie Shipps
Shipps Farms L.P.
17164 WCR 100
Nunn, CO 80648
Cc: Tom Kaldenbach, DRMS
