October 2001 -19- 003-2182.004
4.2.3 Soil Liner Fill
Field testing included monitoring of placement and preparation of SLF for geomembrane
deployment, testing in-place moisture and density with a nuclear gauge, and monitoring depth
verification testing performed by Ames.
4.2.3.1 Field Monitoring
Golder observed Soil Liner Fill placement to verify lift thickness, adequate compaction,
acceptable moisture conditions, final compacted thickness, and suitability for geomembrane
deployment. Golder identified angular particles on the fill surface, ruts, and desiccation cracks,
and brought these features to the attention of Ames for repair. Ames laborers placed fines from
screened Cameron tailings over rough or granular areas of the fill surface, as discussed in
Section 2.4. Golder and Poly-Flex approved the final surface of the Soil Liner Fill prior to
geomembrane deployment.
4.2.3.2 Moisture-Density Test Results
Golder performed a total of 25 in-place moisture-density tests of Soil Liner Fill. Golder
compared results of the field moisture content and density tests to the Proctor dry density and
optimum moisture content values of material with similar gradation and plasticity
characteristics. Proctor dry density and optimum moisture content values for samples with
greater than 10 percent plus three-quarter-inch material were corrected according to
ASTM D4718 to facilitate direct comparison to nuclear density values. The moisture-density
testing frequency of approximately one test per 250 cubic yards exceeded the minimum
specified testing frequency of one test per 500 cubic yards. Nuclear density tests performed are
summarized in Table 10. Nine of the 25 nuclear density tests failed to meet specifications.
These areas were reworked, recompacted, and retested to meet specifications.
