The original plan was approved on May 20, 2002,
and its renewal was most recently approved in a letter dated May 28, 2013. The required fee of $257
for this renewal of the SWSP has been submitted (receipt number 3661755).
Plan Operation
This SWSP covers depletions caused by sand and gravel mining operations at the GSL Sand
and Gravel Mine ( "Applicant "). Mining operations ceased in November 2011 and the pit has since filled,
creating a 26.70 -acre pond. Therefore the entire water surface area is considered to be ground water
as the existing liner is no longer functional due to leaks in two locations.
Depletions
The depletions that result from the past mining operation at the site consist of evaporation from
exposed surface area, water used for dust suppression, water removed in the mined product, water lost
in dewatering and pit filling operations. Other than evaporation from the exposed ground water surface,
no new depletions will occur during this SWSP approval period. All historic water use remains in the
lagging analysis in order to account for any depletion still impacting the river.
Prior to November 2011, the total exposed surface area at this site was one acre. Starting in
November 2011, the operator allowed the pit to fill as mining operations were complete and the liner
was not functional. The Applicant had estimated that the pit would fill with ground water to an
equilibrium state within three months. The pit is now 26.7 acres as demonstrated by a survey of the
property performed in August 2012. It is assumed the 26.7 -acre pond has existed since February 2012.
Net evaporative depletions were calculated using a gross annual evaporation of 45 inches from the
exposed water surface, with a credit of 10.8 inches for effective precipitation. The net depletion of
ground water due to evaporation of, ground water exposed at the site has been calculated to be 76.38
Office of the State Engineer
1313 Sherman Street, Suite 818 • Denver, CO 80203 • Phone: 303 -866 -3581 • Fax: 303 - 866 -3589
www.water.state.co.us
